Control of Your Influences, Part 2 of 2

Last post I talked about the importance of having awesome people in your life.  But if we’re not already surrounded by awe-inspiring people, or have no connections, we have to make the effort to find positive influences.  As I mentioned, we are not always in control of who we spend our time with.  Luckily, there are other ways to get in touch with the type of people you aspire to be:

  • There are websites for any topic of your interest, with tons of expert advice: Entrepreneur.com or becomingaminimalist.com are both great ones for me.
  • Meetup.com finds local groups that meets about a wide arrange of interests.
  • Some sites can help you find mentors- but you usually have to pay for them.
  • If you know someone who runs their own business who you aspire to be more like, work for them to learn their ways.

Another sure way to control our influences: the media we choose. I’m not going to argue that trashy television influences us for the negative, or that video games cause shootings, but I do know from personal experience that the media we choose for productive purposes can impact us for the better.  I have definitely been shaped into a better version of myself via the books I’ve read and the radio shows I’ve listened to- thanks Dave Ramsey.  That’s what got me into this field- knowing that people do seek knowledge and can actually be helped to live a better life.  Be a hoarder of knowledge in whatever field you want to improve in, and if you make the choice to act on it, it will make a difference.  Good luck in your pursuit of an awesome life!
